Straw bags, espadrilles, hats... Why does raffia make a comeback every summer like clockwork?
Luxury and raffia: a runway mix
For years--and despite the success of the *couture* espadrilles created by Yves Saint Laurent and Castañer in the 1970s--espadrilles and basket bags were not a common sight in the collections of major fashion houses. That changed in 2007, when Stella McCartney designed sandals made entirely of raffia, marking a major comeback for a material that is at once humble and artisanal, yet also sensory and nostalgic. Since then, few brands have failed to include these accessories in their summer collections--including sophisticated, ultra-sexy shoe designers like Christian Louboutin, whose current "Cassiadrilla" model achieves a perfect hybrid of the house's signature stiletto and traditional espadrille footwear.
