The car is road-legal, although it will not be sold
In April 2002, Ferdinand Piëch--then chairman of the Volkswagen Group--surprised everyone when he arrived at the Annual General Meeting behind the wheel of the L1. He had driven this experimental vehicle the 230 kilometers from Hamburg to Wolfsburg, achieving an average fuel consumption of just 0.89 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers. The prototype lacked a heating system, so Piëch had to travel warmly dressed--wearing a hat and scarf--on a rainy day that also caused the plastic windshield to fog up due to the absence of climate control.
