The concept was subsequently refined, culminating in the Volkswagen XL1, another engineering marvel (albeit with a less radical design approach). Launched in 2013, it was marketed as a car requiring just one liter of diesel per 100 kilometers, thanks to its extreme lightness, sleek aerodynamics, and a diesel-electric hybrid powertrain. Only 250 units were produced worldwide, each with a then-staggering price tag of $126,896; today, however, used models sell for no less than $161,504.
