On 1 October, the Israeli army launched a ground offensive in Lebanon that escalated the conflict after a week of attacks in which hundreds of people were killed. The ground incursions coincided with attacks on southern suburbs of Beirut, Damascus and Gaza, and came despite international calls to move the region away from the brink of a major conflagration.
