The alliance between Aston Martin and Honda, as exclusive as it is uncertain, saw its first chapter unfold in Tokyo on Tuesday, filled with the emotions of a first encounter. The Japanese manufacturer introduced its RA626H engine to the world, aiming to become the "number one in the world" by powering Fernando Alonso's new single-seater.

"We have unwavering faith in Honda's power unit and the engineers who support it," affirmed Lawrence Stroll, CEO of Aston Martin, who was present at the event alongside Toshihiro Mibe, Honda's president, Stefano Domenicali, CEO of Formula 1, and Andy Cowell, strategy chief at Aston Martin.

Stroll's words serve as the best endorsement for Honda, which for the past four seasons has merely supplied components to Red Bull and its sister team. Alonso, on the other hand, once again places his hopes in the Japanese brand, despite his poor experience with them between 2015 and 2017 while driving for McLaren.

"symbol of change and innovation"

The event also unveiled the new logo of the project, which, according to Mibe, will position their brand as a "symbol of change and innovation" in the Grand Prix. "Our path will not always be easy," but "we anticipate many years of successful collaboration," predicted Stroll.

Honda's role will be crucial in Aston Martin's bid to compete for victories in the 2026 World Championship, when the new sporting regulations come into effect. Moving forward, the engines will no longer feature the MGU-H, which recovered energy through the exhaust, but the hybrid component will significantly increase, with almost a 50-50 split between internal combustion and electric power.

Additionally, Aston Martin anticipates improvements in fuel and lubricants through their collaboration with Aramco and Valvoline. However, Honda has already expressed dissatisfaction with Mercedes' initial developments, their main rival, who seem to have found a way to increase the compression ratio of their engines without breaching regulations.

"The regulations in 2026 are very demanding," admitted Koji Watanabe, president of Honda Racing Corporation, during the event in Tokyo. "It's tough. It's a challenge. That's why we would like to take it on. The Sakura factory is also working hard on reliability tests and a test bench. We have a very short timeframe, but we want to ensure we are fully prepared," added the Japanese executive.

Aston Martin's goal, having previously used Mercedes engines, is for Honda to replicate their successful partnership with Red Bull, with whom they secured two constructor titles and all four world championships of Max Verstappen.

The debut with Honda marks the first step of Aston Martin's pre-season, with the unveiling of their new single-seater scheduled for February 9 in Dammam, a city near Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Prior to that, the British team will hit the track for private tests in Montmeló between January 26 and 30. Following the official tests in Bahrain, the 2026 World Championship will kick off in Melbourne on March 8 with the Australian GP.
