Guy Roux is one of the coaching legends in France after spending 44 years at the helm of Auxerre, with whom he won a league title and four French Cups. However, these days he has become the center of controversy due to statements in which he belittles women's football.
"Women are made to give birth, with a wider pelvis. And football is not made for wide pelvises [...] The best female footballers have the same build as boys," stated the 87-year-old former coach in an interview with L'Est Eclair.
Roux was trying to praise the players by stating, "I have great respect for these young women who practice their favorite sport," but his kind words took a wrong turn. "If you ask me if women's matches are spectacular, I refer you to those in Division 1, played in front of 800 spectators," added the veteran coach.
In the interview, he continues with his thesis devaluing women's sports compared to men's. "Once I met a European champion in the 100-meter athletics. She admitted that, despite all her training, Bolt always beat her by 12 or 14 meters in that distance. Men and women are not made the same way, they are not made of the same fabric," he explained.
