The fire started on Sunday afternoon in a four-story building on Union Street. Teams from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service worked overnight to control the flames, which caused serious structural damage to the building. According to local authorities, part of the building, built in 1851, has partially collapsed.
Due to the fire's proximity to the city's main railway station, authorities decided to temporarily close Glasgow Central for safety reasons. The national rail network, managed by National Rail, warned of delays and cancellations on multiple routes connecting Glasgow to other British cities.
Railway companies Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express also reported service changes, including cancellations on routes to Edinburgh, Liverpool, and Manchester Airport. At the moment, no casualties have been reported, although authorities have indicated that the fire is still under investigation, and there is no clear estimate of when the station can reopen. Thousands of travellers have been affected by the closure.
