Former Arsenal FC goalkeeper, Alex Manninger, has passed away at the age of 48 after his car was hit by a train.
Police reported that the incident occurred around 08:20 local time (07:20 BST) at a level crossing in Salzburg, as reported by the BBC.
Manninger played 64 games for Arsenal between 1997 and 2002, winning the Premier League and the FA Cup.
He earned 33 international caps for Austria and was part of the squad that participated in Euro 2008 in his home country.
"Alexander Manninger was an exceptional ambassador for Austrian football, both on and off the field," said Peter Schottel, the sporting director of the Austrian Football Federation.
"His professionalism, composure, and reliability made him a key figure for his teams and the national team.
"His achievements deserve the utmost respect and will be unforgettable."
Manninger began his career at his hometown club, Red Bull Salzburg, and played for 14 teams across Europe, including Espanyol, Siena, Juventus, Udinese, and Augsburg.
He signed a short-term contract with Liverpool FC at the age of 39 in 2016 but did not make an appearance.
During his time at Arsenal, Manninger largely served as a backup to David Seaman, although he stepped in for the English goalkeeper when he was injured towards the end of the 1997-98 season.
That season, Manninger helped Arsenal defeat West Ham on penalties in the sixth round of the FA Cup and stood out in a memorable victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Manninger was named the Premier League Player of the Month in March 1998.
