Morante de la Puebla spent the night in the ICU of the Viamed hospital in Seville, where he was admitted after the surgical intervention he underwent in the infirmary of the Maestranza bullring for the "very serious" goring suffered in the fourth bull of the afternoon.
The doctor Octavio Mulet performed the operation and issued the medical report, detailing the muscle damage in the sphincter area: "Wound by bull horn in the posterior anal margin with a trajectory of about 10 cm, partially damaging the anal sphincter musculature and with a 1.5 cm perforation in the posterior wall of the rectum. Wound lavage, rectal wall and sphincter apparatus repair. Aspirative drainage in the post-anal and retro-rectal space."
Dr. Mulet himself detailed the goring last night in statements to Mundotoro: "It is a very important pain area. The goring has had complex injuries, more than its own severity. It is the anal area, the rectum. A sphincter repair had to be done, making the surgery more complicated". Other injuries in the lumbar area were ruled out during the intervention, pending radiological tests of the goring. The main concern is infections, due to the delicate nature of the wound site.
Morante spent the night calm, sedated under the effects of medication, "watching shoe videos," as Pedro J. Marques told EL MUNDO in the early hours. "He handles gorings well, they are things that happen", he concluded before spending the night at the ICU. The bullfighter from Cigarrero spent the night "calm, with typical discomfort." And, all in all, "very upbeat".
The bullfighting world has been shocked by this incident. The season depends on Morante de la Puebla, who has transcended bullfighting as an icon of popular culture and a mass phenomenon. His April Fair has been simply memorable.
