Right in Bilbao, specifically in the district of Rekalde, there is a neighborhood that seems taken from a London postcard. We are talking about Iralabarri. With its colorful facades and quiet streets, its aesthetics inevitably remind of Notting Hill. The month of May, with its soft light and longer days, is the perfect time to discover it without rush.
Iralabarri, the Notting Hill of Bilbao
Iralabarri was born as a worker housing project in 1916, but today it is a curious example of residential architecture with its own identity. "Behind this idea was the businessman Juan José Irala, owner of the legendary bakery Harino-Panadera from whom the neighborhood received its true name," explained from Bilbao Tourism.
What stands out the most when walking through its streets is the color palette. From soft greens to yellows, passing through dusty pinks or earth tones, these shades make this place a unique corner. That carefully crafted, almost cinematic aesthetic is what has led many to compare it to the famous London neighborhood of Notting Hill.
However, Iralabarri has its own character. It is a quiet neighborhood, with community life, traditional shops, and a sense of authenticity that remains despite the passing years.
What to see in the Iralabarri neighborhood
The best way to discover this neighborhood is simply by walking. "The ensemble of Iralabarri is made up of semi-detached houses and chalets, with their gardens and patios, with a strong English inspiration, but with certain Basque touches," detailed from Bilbao Tourism.
The streets of Kirikiño, Baiona, and Zuberoa are where most of the colorful houses are located. Another place of interest is the former Harino-Panadera factory. The building, inaugurated in 1902 and declared a Cultural Heritage Site, is an example of industrial rationalism. Today it houses public administration offices and a museum with the original machinery of the company.
In the neighborhood, you can also visit the church of San Luis Beltrán, the Vista Alegre bullring, and the Torre Urizar farmhouse, dating back to the 16th century. Additionally, it offers a good gastronomic offer with numerous bars where you can enjoy traditional pintxos from Bilbao.
