There are many unknowns surrounding the death of Nikoline, a Norwegian teenager who went missing around 4:00 in the morning on Monday, July 6 in Puerto Banús (Marbella) and was run over an hour and a half later on the A-7, in the municipality of Mijas, over 30 kilometers from the nightclub where her friends last saw her alive.
So far, not many details have emerged about the circumstances surrounding that hour and a half before her death, which could be crucial in clarifying what happened.
It is unknown with whom she left the nightclub, where she was during this time, or with whom. It is also not certain how she reached kilometer 1027 of the old N-340 or what led her to cross a four-lane highway in the middle of the night. The identity of the person driving the vehicle that hit her and why they did not stop to help is also unknown.
No hypothesis is ruled out, not even that the young girl was trying to escape from the driver of the car in which she may have arrived at the area where she was run over.
The Civil Guard has opened an investigation with the intention of identifying and locating the person behind the wheel of the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run, which, according to witnesses who have spoken to this newspaper, could be a small truck, a van, or a pickup.
The 17-year-old Norwegian teenager, Nikoline, went out partying with a friend, it was her last night of vacation on the Costa del Sol before returning home, and they went to watch her country's national team play in Marbella, but the girl did not return to sleep nor answer calls from friends and family.
Her mother, concerned about the lack of communication with her daughter and after speaking with the friend she had met, who could not account for the girl's whereabouts, filed an official report for her disappearance at the National Police station in Fuengirola and asked for help to locate her through social media.
The face of a young girl with fair skin, light eyes, long blonde hair, who stood out for her beauty, quickly appeared on the computers and mobile devices of thousands of residents of the Costa del Sol, and the news of the disappearance of the Norwegian girl went viral within minutes.
"Even if she stays out at night, we usually stay in touch," Nikoline's mother explained to EL MUNDO when she still did not know that her daughter had passed away and maintained hope of finding her safe and sound. It would be hours before the disappearance of the girl in Marbella - whose investigation had been taken over by the National Police - was linked to the fatal traffic accident in Mijas, investigated by the Civil Guard.
Shortly after Nikoline's disappearance was known, the worst fears of the family were confirmed, the battered and lifeless body of the girl was found linked to a hit-and-run over 30 kilometers from the trendy venue where the friend told the girl's mother she had last seen her.
And so, what initially seemed like the mischief of a young girl who had gone out partying, had fun, and forgot to inform her parents, has turned into an event with numerous unknowns to clarify and many questions to answer.
Like many other Norwegians, Nikoline was spending a few days on vacation with her family on the Costa del Sol, but on this same Monday, she was planning to return to her home country where, as her mother has said, she was going to attend a friend's birthday party.
On her last day in Malaga, the girl arranged to watch the Norwegian national team's match, which at 10:00 pm -peninsular time- was playing against Brazil in the World Cup round of 16.
Nikoline and her friend traveled to Marbella to enjoy the match and there they coincided - as reported by the friend to her mother - with more young Norwegians. Then, as Erling Haaland's team won and beat the Brazilian team 2-1, they went to celebrate. The group - old friends and newly met ones - headed to a trendy venue in Puerto Banús, the Funky Buddha.
The last contact Nikoline had with her mother took place around 1:30 in the morning, at which time the girl spoke with her mother, who says that nothing was out of the ordinary.
Around 4:00 in the morning, the girl's friend went to the bathroom, and when she came out, she could not find Nikoline. She had disappeared.
The last signal from her phone placed her in the vicinity of the nightclub shortly after. Then, nothing.
At 5:20 in the morning, several witnesses alerted the Emergency Service 112 Andalucía of a fatal hit-and-run on the A-7 as it passed through the municipality of Mijas. A vehicle had hit a woman on the road, and after being thrown, she was left injured on the Marbella-bound lane. The girl, who turned out to be Nikoline, died almost instantly from the injuries.
