Raúl Asencio has been convicted of a crime against road safety after being caught driving under the influence of alcohol in the south of Gran Canaria. The Real Madrid footballer had a reading of 0.90 milligrams of alcohol per liter of exhaled air, nearly four times the maximum allowed for general drivers.
As reported by 'Atlántico Hoy' and confirmed by the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC), the incident occurred on August 16 during a preventive checkpoint in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, one of the nightlife areas in the south of the island. The player was behind the wheel of a Porsche when stopped by the authorities.
Asencio admitted the facts three days later, on August 19, during a speedy trial held in the same municipality. The sentence, given by mutual agreement and therefore final, includes a fine of 14,400 euros, equivalent to four months with a daily rate of 120 euros, in addition to an eight-month driving ban.
The footballer was not involved in any accident and, according to available information, was not driving recklessly. He was intercepted during one of the preventive checkpoints that the Local Police and the Civil Guard regularly carry out during the busiest nights in the south of Gran Canaria to detect drivers under the influence of alcohol.
The recorded level, 0.90 mg/l, significantly exceeds the limit of 0.25 mg/l set for general drivers. From 0.60 mg/l onwards, the behavior ceases to be an administrative offense and becomes a crime against road safety.
