For Pierre and Justin Trudeau (53), father and son who were prime ministers of Canada, their conquests with major entertainment figures are not unfamiliar. The former dated Barbra Streisand (83) before being elected as the country's leader, and the latter has just confirmed his relationship with Katy Perry seven months after his resignation. Here is the chronological relationship of both.
After 18 years of marriage, Justin Trudeau, still being prime minister, posted on Instagram in August 2023 a statement in which he said the following: "Hello everyone, Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have decided to separate." Along with his wife Sophie Grégoire, he has three children, Xavier (17), Ella-Grace (16), and Hadrien (11).
On the other hand, last July, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom, after nine years of marriage and a daughter together, Daisy, informed Us Weekly magazine that they were separating: "They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is, and always will be, to raise their daughter with love, stability, and mutual respect."
Although Justin and Katy had met at an event that the English-speaking media cannot quite place, it wasn't until late July that they were able to be photographed together. The first media outlet to publish their night out was TMZ, which claimed they had dinner on July 28 at the elegant restaurant Le Violon de Montreal.
Two days later, Justin attended Perry's concert as part of the Lifetimes Tour. In a video posted on social media, the former prime minister looked very youthful in a black short-sleeved shirt, dancing and singing enthusiastically to the song "Firework."
Despite important media outlets such as Us Weekly, People, Daily Mail, or The Sun publishing contradictory information about a possible distancing of the couple, images of Trudeau and Perry kissing and cuddling on a yacht off the coast of Santa Barbara, California, published by the Daily Mail on October 11, cleared any doubts. Their romance continues to evolve.
A source close to the couple told The Sun that "they haven't been able to spend much time together as she is on tour, but they are constantly in contact, always through FaceTime and exchanging messages."
As for Pierre Trudeau, the politician met Barbra Streisand in 1968 during the premiere of Funny Girl, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. In her memoirs My Name is Barbra, published in late 2023, the diva reflected: "That's the kind of man I would like to date." It didn't matter that he was 23 years older.
After talking with him, she concluded that "Trudeau was very elegant, intelligent, intense... a kind of combination of Albert Einstein and Napoleon (just taller). And he was doing important work. I was dazzled," she recounted in the book. Gradually, that budding friendship turned into a romantic relationship. Their brief affair delighted both the tabloid and political press, as Barbra, separated since February 1969, was still officially married to actor Elliott Gould (87), with whom she had a son, Jason (58). The divorce came in July 1971.
Barbra and Pierre seemed very in tune at the various official events they attended, as he had been elected prime minister in April 1968. In her memoirs, the singer revealed that Pierre "had a great smile and cheekbones that could have been carved in marble. And it was nice to be with a man who had his own light shining on him, so I could stay a bit in the shadows."
Although they got along well, the director of The Prince of Tides (1991) found it increasingly unfeasible to continue their romance as she felt pressured and intimidated being next to a leader of a Commonwealth country. In early 1970, they broke up, and in March 1971, Trudeau secretly married Margaret Sinclair, 29 years younger, and the mother not only of Justin but also of Alexandre (51) and Michel, who died in a skiing accident in 1998 at the age of 23.
