The beginning of 2026 turned into the worst nightmare for Melissa Gilbert (61) and her husband, Timothy Busfield (68), who is currently awaiting trial on four charges of child sexual abuse. Apparently, the criminal sexual contacts with eleven-year-old twins took place between November 2022 and early 2024 while he was directing some episodes of the series The Cleaning Lady (2022-2025), filmed in Albuquerque.
After being missing for a few days, Busfield surrendered to local authorities and was taken to a detention center in New Mexico. Much has been said and written about this tragic event that has already led to the actor and director's cancellation.
For the first time since the events occurred, Melissa Gilbert, internationally famous for her role in Little House on the Prairie, granted her first television interview this Monday to George Stephanopoulos, host of Good Morning America on ABC.
"This has been the most traumatic experience of our lives", stated the actress firmly. And added, "Our life, as we knew it, is over. We are mourning what we had: all our plans, all our dreams, all our ideas, all our projects. For Tim, it's over. He's canceled. Even if he is exonerated, he will always be 'that guy'. He is the last person in the world who would harm a child. And believe me, if I thought for a second that Tim Busfield harmed a child, he would have much more to worry about than prison."
The actors met by chance in 2012 at a bar near Universal Studios where Timothy used to go to watch some of his favorite sports while enjoying some pizzas. There was a woman sitting alone at the bar, they started talking, and something changed between them. "It was like feeling the impact of lightning", Busfield confessed to People magazine.
They were so convinced that their relationship could work that despite both having had two failed marriages each, they decided to say "I do" on April 24, 2013, at San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara, California.
Melissa has a daughter named Dakota (36), from her first marriage to director Bo Brinkman (69), and a son, Michael (30), from her relationship with actor Bruce Boxleitner (75). Timothy, on the other hand, has three children, Samuel, Daisy, and Wilson.
During their conversation on Good Morning America, Gilbert opened up. Nervous, trembling, and tearful at times, the actress stated regarding her marriage and her husband that "we have had many ups and downs, we have faced difficulties, we have had our own problems to deal with, and we have overcome everything. He is, above all, completely honest with me. I trust him with the lives of my children, my grandchildren, my nieces, and nephews. He is an honorable, loving, and generous person."
Social media has been harsh on them. Rumors and gossip have emerged that do not paint the marriage in a good light, even questioning Melissa's true role in all of this. The police report revealed last January that she bought Christmas gifts for the two brothers and even invited them to dinner on occasion because a good atmosphere had been created on the set. And above all, Melissa made it clear that the minors' relatives were witnesses to everything.
At one point in the interview, a certain dark past in Timothy's life in the years 1994 and 2012 was brought up. In this regard, Melissa was clear: "These accusations have been floating in the air for a long time. When Tim and I got together, the internet already existed. I did not enter my relationship with him blindly. I am not naive nor am I an accomplice. I talked to him about it, I asked him about it. I listened to his version of events, which no one has ever heard, which is the truth. And when the time is right, which is not now, Tim will tell the truth about all these past accusations when he needs to."
After being accused of child sexual abuse on January 9, Timothy Busfield's career began to suffer. For example, the episode in which he appeared on the series Law & Order was canceled, and his presence in the movie You Deserve Each Other has been digitally removed. Timothy became very popular in the late eighties with the series Thirtysomething (1987-1991).
