Known for her critical voice and free spirit, Smith did not hold back in expressing her deep discontent with the political situation in her country.
During a press conference at the Hotel de La Reconquista, the "godmother of punk" stated that the leadership of the United States is "deplorable". With her characteristic frankness, she declared: "I have nothing good to say. Normally, even when something is wrong, there is always something good to say, but not in this case". Despite not identifying herself as conservative or democrat, but as a "global person", Smith confessed to feeling "ashamed of the current administration, of the current government" of her nation.
Faced with this situation, Patti Smith emphasized that the role of artists alone is no longer sufficient to bring about the necessary change. Instead, she made a strong call for the unity of all citizens, highlighting that "people have the power, even though they may sometimes feel otherwise". For the artist, what the United States needs at this moment is for "people to use that power, to rise up, come together, and vote".
"We need people to join us, we need large numbers, artists, activists, people of all kinds who want to do good, not only in the United States but also worldwide," expressed Smith, emphasizing the importance of voting in the upcoming elections. Her message transcends borders, urging for a global mobilization for the greater good.
The artist not only spoke about the political situation but also shared her personal perspective, mentioning the sadness that "the times we are living in, the turbulent world we find ourselves in" bring her, despite celebrating a special moment in her career like the 50th anniversary of her first performance in Spain.
