Madrid-born actress, Karla Sofía Gascón, nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars, has avoided walking the red carpet at the Dolby Theatre. Zoe Saldaña's request to reunite the entire cast of the movie Emilia Pérez in Hollywood to conclude the journey that began in Cannes has not been fulfilled. And, although the Spanish actress was one of the most anticipated names after the recent controversy, her name was not even mentioned before the gala began.
Neither Zoe Saldaña nor Selena Gomez, her two co-stars, were asked any questions about Gascón as they walked the red carpet. Only the fourth member of the cast that was awarded in Cannes in May made a reference while speaking to the Movistar + microphones. "Each project and experience brings us learning, but in the end, what matters is the people we work with and the love that was generated among us," said the Mexican actress.
The first image seen of Karla Sofía Gascón was inside the Dolby Theatre, where she kissed her co-star Selena Gomez. Not a step on the red carpet, let alone a stop for the press present. Even though her co-star, Zoe Saldaña, had requested earlier in the week for the four actresses of Emilia Pérez to reunite.
"I think it's important that we end this chapter as a team, as the project began from the start, and then each one can continue on their own path. If it's about redemption, then redemption," Saldaña stated during the nominees' meeting held last Tuesday at the Hollywood Academy Museum.
In fact, the first mention of Karla Sofía Gascón throughout the gala was by host Conan O'Brien with a joke referring to the number of times Gascón's publicist said "damn." When her name was mentioned, applause was heard, and the comedian emphasized his jokes: "Karla Sofía, if you've tweeted about the Oscars, remember that my name is Jimmy Kimmel." Referring to last year's host.
The absence of comments about the Spanish actress was, however, the general trend throughout the gala. Her co-star Saldaña, upon receiving the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, did not even mention her colleague. A mention was made by one of the composers of the songThe Evil - also an Oscar winner - Clément Ducol, who briefly thanked Gascón and Saldaña for "bringing that song to life."
During the final weeks leading up to the Oscars, the Madrid-born actress was a major focus due to her racist and Islamophobic tweets. Just two weeks ago, the Spanish actress's career seemed to be over, along with her relationship with Netflix, despite being the face of their major Oscar contender, Emilia Pérez. However, this week everything changed again: the platform lifted the ban imposed on her on the 4th. Although winning the statuette is out of the question - she wasn't a favorite before either - the gesture is significant as it signifies a truce.
The streaming giant decided, upon learning about her past content on the X social network, to ban Karla Sofía Gascón from all pre-Oscar events, even removing her from promotional emails. For eight days, the future of the Spanish actress seemed to be crumbling because the publisher Dos Bigotes decided not to reprint her novel with a new version that was ready; Emilia Pérez's director, Frenchman Jacques Audiard, accused her of playing the "victim" and described her comments as "hateful" and "unforgivable," with no one speaking in her favor.
However, with time and the silence agreement signed by the Madrid-born actress, her situation has been gradually improving. As reported by this newspaper, Karla Sofía Gascón maintains all the contracts she had signed for the next year. Among them is her role as the lead in Las malas, the film adaptation of Camila Sosa's novel that will serve as the first international experience for the Los Javis production company.
