The Oasis phenomenon extends to fashion: with the Gallaghers, the Britpop aesthetic returns

Updated

Brands like Adidas, Umbro, or Burberry have been eagerly anticipating the return, which is boosting their popularity just like it did in the 90s and 2000s

The countdown is coming to an end. There is less than a week left for the Gallaghers to kick off the Oasis 2025 tour in Cardiff on July 4, in their highly anticipated - and somewhat unexpected - reunion. The excitement that has taken over their fans since they announced it last year is undeniable, but it goes far beyond their music. The brothers are a phenomenon in themselves.

Walking the streets of Manchester or London, we can find little doubles of Liam and Noel. The Gallagher style has made a strong comeback with the reunion. The duo's return is once again making the mod style fashionable, the one that emerged with the 60s kids in Britain, fans of pop music with an elegant way of dressing. But it also brought back those haircuts that the brothers popularized in the 90s.

Their aesthetic emerged as a response and rejection of the dominant American grunge trend of the time. The style of the Oasis members reflected elements of the British working class, like the haircut worn by the Beatles or straight-leg pants. Noel, always more casual, in Adidas zip-up hoodies, and Liam, the great diva, in more eccentric and polished garments.

A few weeks ago, Burberry surprised everyone by leading their Festival 2025 campaign, celebrating British music culture as the UK festival season is about to begin, including Glastonbury. Leading the campaign, as expected, was Liam Gallagher. Additionally, he was accompanied by his children, Lennon Gallagher, Molly Moorish-Gallagher, and Gene Gallagher, along with other British icons like Cara Delevingne and Alexa Chung.

It's almost impossible to think of the iconic Burberry checks or their parkas without thinking of Liam, just as imagining him and his brother on stage probably includes them wearing a Kangol bucket hat, an Umbro sweatshirt, John Lennon-style glasses, and Adidas sneakers. Seeing these garments immediately reconnects with the golden era of British pop culture.

But that wasn't their only collaboration with brands, as Liam Gallagher's face appeared on the tongues of the Adidas Spezial LG2 SPZL sneakers. The three stripes brand has also announced a collection from their Originals line inspired by their style, with the brothers collaborating. This collection will be released on July 20, featuring classic t-shirts and tracksuits with a patch reading Oasis. Additionally, Umbro has revived one of their most iconic pieces: the Drill Top that Liam Gallagher immortalized during Oasis' legendary concert at Maine Road in April 1996.

It is said that on that night, feeling the cold of the stadium, Gallagher borrowed a garment from the Manchester City dressing room - sponsored by Umbro - and unintentionally turned it into a style symbol. This washed-out looking sweatshirt, with details on the collar and cuffs, is already sold out despite its price of 101 euros.

This revival is not just a fashion matter but a demonstration of how British cultural heritage is recycled and commercialized, appealing to the nostalgia of a generation that now has purchasing power, or seems to have it, in any case.

Their style, being easy to replicate and relatively accessible at the time, resonated with their audience and created its own style code: carefree, recognizable anywhere, and, above all, very much in line with their britpop music, the genre that defined an entire decade. They wore it almost as a class statement, and now it's pure nostalgia.

And although it's not clothing, a pair of maracas is always the perfect accessory in case one starts feeling supersonic. With every parka, every retro t-shirt, and every note of their most iconic songs, the Oasis leaders prove that they never really left. They were just waiting for the right moment to come back and make a style statement.
