Faced with the situation, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department rescue team deployed a search and rescue helicopter to locate both in a difficult-to-access mountainous area.
Thanks to a specialized canine rescue harness, the rescuers were able to safely lift the injured dog and transport it to the helicopter. During the operation, all safety protocols were followed for both the animal and its owner, who remained accompanied at all times.
Subsequently, the hiker and their pet were transported to a local veterinarian for immediate medical attention. According to authorities, the dog showed signs of exhaustion and possible muscle injuries, but a swift recovery is expected.
These types of mountain trail rescues are becoming more common in Arizona, where high temperatures and rugged terrain can pose a danger to hikers and animals. Authorities recommend planning routes and carrying enough water for both people and pets.
