Christopher Lloyd: the lonely childhood and the five marriages of Dr. Emmett Brown from Back to the Future

Updated

Since his first appearance on the big screen in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), Christopher Lloyd (87) has earned the affection of the public. In the following decade, he starred alongside Michael J. Fox (64) in one of the most famous trilogies in the history of cinema, Back to the Future, which is celebrating four decades

Lloyd's lineage is prestigious, as his ancestors include John Howland, a passenger on the Mayflower - the founders of the United States, his maternal grandfather was Lewis Henry Lapham, one of the founders of the Texaco oil company, and his uncle Roger Lapham was one of the mayors of San Francisco.

The actor is the seventh of the children of the marriage formed by Samuel, a lawyer, and Ruth, a singer, from whom our protagonist inherited his passion for the arts. He had a rather solitary childhood and adolescence, as he grew up practically alone at home due to the age difference with his siblings. This solitude intensified his shy character, which has greatly influenced his career. However, he is a kind, generous, and quite talkative person once he feels comfortable.

After leaving his studies, he moved to New York because his ambition was to do theater on Broadway, where he debuted in 1961 with the play And They Put Handcuffs on the Flowers by the Spanish playwright and poet Fernando Arrabal (93).

To date, he has been married five times. The first time was to actress Catherine Dixon (1959-1971), the second to also actress Kay Tornborg (1975-1987), the third to Carol Ann Vanek (1988-1991), the fourth to screenwriter Jane Walker (1992-2005), and the last to businesswoman Lisa Loicano (55) in 2016. Despite being one of the Hollywood men who has been married the most times, the actor has not had children.

The curious thing about his last marriage is that Lisa met the actor because she was the real estate agent in charge of selling the property that Christopher and Jane owned in Montecito, the same Californian town where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex reside.

Two of Christopher Lloyd's great passions are fly fishing and hiking, so at 87 years old, he always finds time to be in contact with nature.
