This astronomical figure makes the piece one of the most expensive Russian art objects ever auctioned. The exquisite jewel was conceived for the Romanov dynasty by order of the last Tsar of Russia, who was overthrown in 1918, as a gift for his mother, Dagmar of Denmark (Maria Feodorovna Romanova). The sale took place during Christie's 'Classic Week', which, along with Sotheby's, competes for global leadership in the art market. It is important to note that this is the third occasion in which Christie's has featured the sale of this 'imperial egg'. Typically, as is customary in these transactions, the buyer's name has not been disclosed, likely represented by professional intermediaries. The jewel is famous for its extreme complexity. It is considered one of the most complex pieces ever created by the legendary jeweler. Carved in rock crystal, both the egg and its base give this jewel a remarkable translucent character.
Margo Oganesian, head of the Russian Works department at Christie's, details that the crystal egg and its base are topped with platinum snowflakes, set with pink diamonds. Oganesian emphasizes the technical challenge posed by its creation: "Undoubtedly, it is one of the most complex and technically challenging pieces that Fabergé ever created," highlighting the manipulation of materials. The level of luxury is astonishing: "It features at least 4,500 diamonds, as indicated in the jewel's original record - Oganesian states. An unimaginable number that sets the 'Winter Egg' apart from other imperial Easter eggs." The egg, about 15 centimeters in height, hides a symbolic secret inside. It opens to reveal a smaller platinum basket filled with delicate white spring flowers with intricate details. The design is attributed to a young woman named Alma Pihl (1888-1976), one of the few women who worked within Fabergé's workshop. Regarding this hidden element, Oganesian points out its significant symbolism: "Symbolism is crucial, as the 'Winter Egg' symbolizes the spring that comes after winter. It is the symbol of resurrection."
