The most acclaimed series of all time makes its way to the big screen. HBO and Warner Bros have announced the movie Game of Thrones: The Conquest of Aegon, the first cinematic installment of the franchise that will serve as a prequel to the series.

This news was revealed during CinemaCon, the Warner Bros event held in Las Vegas (United States) to announce their upcoming film projects. The film was presented at the convention with a planned theatrical release starting in 2027.

The only available information about this installment is that it will adapt the story of Aegon I Targaryen, also known as the Conqueror or the Dragon, who was the first king of the Seven Kingdoms. This monarch rode Balerion, the greatest dragon in the history of the Game of Thrones universe.

The movie promises to be one of the biggest cinematic events in the coming years. Meanwhile, the franchise is premiering the third season of House of the Dragon this June, while filming the second season of The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

The Lord of the Rings, the other big announcement

The ceremony has sparked much discussion thanks to other announced releases. The most significant of all was the official confirmation of the next Lord of the Rings film, titled The Hunt for Gollum. For this, it has been officially announced that Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf, as well as Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins.

The big surprise of this announcement is undoubtedly the presence of Aragorn, but Viggo Mortensen will be replaced by Jamie Dornan, an actor known for his roles in the 50 Shades of Grey movies. The film is estimated to be released on December 17, 2027.
