Not only is it the paradisiacal enclave where Britney Spears lives all year round, films her getaways for her reality show, Beyoncé, and built the house of his dreams with his best friend, the husband of model Cindy Crawford, George Clooney. The exclusive Mexican municipality of Los Cabos, in the state of Baja California Sur, is also famous for its natural wealth worthy of a Guinness World Record, with wild beaches, endless deserts, and one of the most impressive seabeds on the planet. As stated by the renowned biologist Jacques Cousteau, who described the waters of the Sea of Cortez that bathes its coast (on one side; on the other emerges the Pacific Ocean) as "the aquarium of the world."
A taco only for millionaires
Can Los Cabos boast of anything else? Yes, its gastronomy. It is one of the trendiest foodie destinations, with numerous award-winning chefs and restaurants, and a significant presence in the Michelin Guide of Mexico since its creation just two years ago, highlighting the inclusion of chef Sidney Schutte from the Cocina de Autor restaurant at the luxury hotel (or rather, ultra-luxury as the five stars fall short) Grand Velas Los Cabos.
The culinary fame of this accommodation dates back, as it has also been offering the most expensive taco in the world since 2017. The price? 25,000 dollars (almost 22,000 euros). It goes by the name of Frida on the menu, as a tribute to the Mexican artist by the hotel's executive chef, Juan Licerio Alcalá. Among its ingredients are Kobe beef, Beluga Almas caviar (the most expensive in the world), lobster, brie cheese, black and white truffles, and the star component, 24-karat gold sheets.
The inventor chef also recommends that it be enjoyed with a chili sauce (after all, we are in Mexico...), premium tequila Ley .925 (the bottle costs around 150,000 euros), and civet coffee, produced from the beans consumed and expelled by the mammal of the same name. Also the most expensive in the world.
A gourmet universe
The spectacular taco is not the only gourmet reason to travel to Los Cabos. As we mentioned, the municipality has earned its place as one of the essential spots for food lovers not only in the Latin American country but throughout the world.
As an example, there are specific neighborhoods where cuisine takes center stage. Like the Distrito 23400 in the town of San José del Cabo, one of the two main population centers in the municipality alongside Cabo San Lucas. In this area, more than twenty restaurants alternate traditional recipes with international influences.
Additionally, it is the venue for the gastronomic festival San José Fusión, held once a year. Every Tuesday, on the other hand, there is Tasty Tuesday, with offers of one to three three-course menus at a fixed price. Among the restaurants not to be missed are places like Choriarte, Jardín Secreto, Yumana, and Don Sánchez.
From farm to table
Los Cabos is also known for offering flavors linked to essence, roots, and local culture. Hence its numerous proposals of the farm-to-table trend, seeking fair, sustainable, and healthy cuisine with organic and locally sourced products. This is the case of Límo Heritage Kitchen, also in San José del Cabo, but on the outskirts, where it celebrates "authentic Baja California cuisine" through the "heritage" left by this land, in the words of its chef, Guillermo J. Gómez, a true authority in this field.
Featured in the Michelin Guide 2025, its home is a true oasis in nature where its organic crops take place, prioritizing fresh herbs that end up in each dish, as well as a farm with animals. The undisputed protagonist of its cuisine is fire, so wood-fired cooking marks the menu, with delicacies such as grilled yellowtail jack or pork flank. You must also try their spectacular signature cocktails.
Another farm-to-table restaurant is Jazamango, located on the outskirts of the magical town of Todos Santos. Outdoors and surrounded by their own orchards where they source the main menu products, the renowned Javier Plascencia, with over 30 years of professional experience, creates a bucolic atmosphere to enjoy creative dishes like the house ceviche with the catch of the day (the sea is just steps away), the grilled chocolate clams, the wood-fired marrow bones, or the braised beef rib.
Acrid, green flavors
We cannot forget Acre, with a Green Michelin Star (awarded to the best sustainable restaurants) and a garden with over 60 organic products from which they obtain mangos, peppers, tomatoes, potatoes... This garden surrounds the outdoor design space where different tables are set up, like the previous ones, illuminated with torches, lanterns, and starlight. There, among jungle palms, dishes signed by chef David Fajardo and his team parade, such as fresh Baja oysters, black truffle pizza, or slow-cooked ribs for eight hours. A tequila and mezcal tasting awaits at the Colibrí bar.
Glamour squared
Los Cabos offers much more, such as the fusion cuisine that blends Nikkei flavors with those of all Latin America at Toro Latin Kitchen Cabo, a glamorous hideaway surrounded by gardens that could easily have a branch in Ibiza. There's even a DJ... You must try the tuna chicharrón, Baja oysters, red shrimp and crab aguachile, the Jamaica-Kampachi tiradito, or the acevichado Nikkei roll.
Pure Mexican identity
For those who want to savor authentic homemade tacos with live music, they can go to La Lupita in Cabo San Lucas, where you must also try the "Mexican contemporary cuisine" of chef César Pita, who offers "a sensory journey crafted with soul and intention" at his Fénix restaurant, located atop the exclusive Pedregal neighborhood, one of the most exclusive in the municipality. Fire-grilled cuts of meat (wood-fired grills and brick ovens are there, in front of the diner), fresh seafood and fish take the spotlight, as well as the views of the bay.
The Best Views
The most beautiful sunset, however, can be enjoyed from the multi-award-winning Sunset Monalisa (one of Mexico's best restaurants and ranked among the most romantic and with the best views in the world), a true vantage point overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Here, you can see and be seen with the famous geological formation of El Arco, the quintessential icon of Los Cabos, peeking out in the distance. The exact moment of sunset is signaled by the sound of a conch shell. Afterward, two tenors perform operatic pieces that accompany the Mediterranean dishes with local touches prepared by Héctor Morales. You can choose from three, four, five, or seven-course tasting menus featuring dishes such as lacquered eggplant, fettuccine with truffle, duck confit, or Josper-oven shrimp. Enjoy!
