Do you like action and don't know what to watch on Netflix? In this sense, you may have missed one of the big premieres from a couple of years ago. We are talking about the third most-watched movie on the platform, according to the latest official data, directed by a Spanish director who excels in this cinematic genre like no other: Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown).
The action movie that is a hit on Netflix with over 170 million views
The movie is none other than Carry-On, a title that has managed to accumulate 172.1 million views in its first 91 days since landing on Netflix. One of its main attractions is the chemistry of the lead pair: Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service) and Sofia Carson (A Cinderella Story: If the Shoe Fits).
"When Jaume first proposed the role to me, I told him I didn't want to do something that felt like the typical action hero. Luckily, neither of us believed that was what was interesting about Ethan. We focused on making him seem like a normal and relatable person... as normal as someone can be in such an extraordinary situation," Egerton explained to Netflix.
A mysterious passenger blackmails an airport security agent (Ethan) to let him board a dangerous package onto a plane on Christmas Eve. "I loved that it was an action thriller where the female lead wasn't a damsel in distress. She is a confident, brave, and determined young woman, and I was drawn to that confidence and fearlessness in pursuing everything she wants in life," Carson emphasized about her character.
The screenplay by T.J. Fixman (Ratchet & Clank: The Movie) immerses us in the nightmare experienced by a young TSA agent to prevent a dangerous package from boarding a flight on Christmas Eve. In this regard, the extreme circumstances of the story come hand in hand with the sinister villain played by Jason Bateman (Ozark), with whom Ethan will engage in a high-flying chess match. Where was it filmed? Although set at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the filming took place in New Orleans.
Carry-On (its original title) has an average rating of 6.5 on IMDb and 87% on Rotten Tomatoes (indicating that most reviews are positive). Additionally, it only lasts two hours. Can it be watched even if it's not Christmas? Collet-Serra is clear: "My hope is that it can be enjoyed throughout the year as an entertaining thriller full of tension."
