Just a two-hour drive from Seville, one of the most unique destinations in Europe is Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory mainly known for hosting monkeys in the wild.
However, this small city of about 40,000 inhabitants has much more to offer its visitors. It has numerous natural and heritage attractions that few people know about.
Gibraltar is the only place in Europe with monkeys in the wild
The Gibraltar monkeys are the only ones living freely in the entire Old Continent. It is believed that the Barbary macaques (species name), which inhabit the Rock Natural Reserve, were introduced centuries ago from North Africa.
The presence of these animals has given rise to numerous legends. One of the most well-known claims that as long as the monkeys remain on the Rock, Gibraltar will remain British. Beyond popular stories, observing these primates moving among trails, viewpoints, and rocky areas is a special experience.
In addition to the monkeys, the Natural Reserve offers spectacular views of the Strait of Gibraltar. On clear days, it is even possible to see the African coast and understand the strategic importance that this enclave has historically had.
Gibraltar, an underrated city among caves and cliffs
The Rock of Gibraltar not only stands out for its fauna. Its geography is another of its great attractions. The imposing cliffs that rise above the sea create a landscape of great beauty that can be explored through trails and panoramic walkways.
One of the most visited places is the St. Michael's Cave, an impressive natural cavity full of stalactites and stalagmites. This underground space, used for different purposes for centuries, currently houses an auditorium where concerts and cultural events are held.
It is also worth visiting the Skywalk, a glass platform located at a great height that allows you to enjoy privileged views of the Mediterranean, the Bay of Algeciras, and North Africa. Other interesting monuments of the Rock are the Pillars of Hercules and the Windsor Suspension Bridge, which rises to 50 meters.
Despite its small size, this territory offers much more than a quick excursion. Its streets, its historical heritage, and its natural landscapes make Gibraltar an underrated city that deserves to be discovered calmly.
