The football world remains shocked by the death of Alex Hughes, son of the former Welsh striker of Manchester United, Chelsea, Bayern, and FC Barcelona, Mark Hughes. The death occurred suddenly on June 19, when he was 38 years old, although a British coroner has now confirmed that the cause of death was Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS), concluding that it was a death from natural causes.
It was revealed during the forensic investigation that Alex Hughes suffered a collapse in the bedroom of his home in Prestbury, Cheshire. It was his two children who found him, and the eldest tried to resuscitate him by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation before the arrival of emergency services, who were unable to save him.
Alex Hughes had built an extensive career in football. After a brief playing career, he worked in performance analysis and player recruitment roles at clubs such as Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, AFC Fylde, Morecambe, and since 2025, he was responsible for player recruitment at Grimsby Town.
Following the news of his death, Mark Hughes and his wife, Jill, released a statement through the League Managers Association stating they were "completely devastated" by the "sudden and unexpected" loss of their son. Grimsby Town also expressed their sorrow, describing Alex as a highly respected professional and a much-loved individual within the club.
The funeral brought together numerous figures from British football, including Sir Alex Ferguson, Ryan Giggs, and Bryan Robson, who wanted to support the Hughes family during one of the most difficult moments of their lives.
