"Yesterday we took three steps forward," with these words, Kirill Dmitriev, special envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin, stated that there have been advances in negotiations with United States for peace in Ukraine after two days of meetings in Washington with members of Donald Trump's Administration, reports Efe.
"I would say that today and yesterday we took three steps forward on a large number of issues," Dmitriev pointed out, who traveled to the country to continue negotiations to end the Ukrainian war, becoming the first senior Russian official to visit the United States since the conflict began in 2022.
Dmitriev noted that the relationship has been frozen for three years and, therefore, "the dialogue and resolution process will take time, but it is definitely positive and constructive."
The Kremlin's emissary met on Wednesday at the White House with Trump's envoy for the Middle East and Russia, Steve Witkoff, on the same day that the U.S. president announced a 10% tariff for most countries in the world, a list in which Russia is not included.
In another interview with CNN, Dmitriev stated that there is an "understanding" between the parties on how to move forward to reach an agreement.
Putin's envoy assured that in their meetings, there was no discussion of lifting sanctions on Russia, but he mentioned that U.S. companies would be welcome to operate in the country.
The visit comes as Trump begins to show signs of frustration towards Russia for the country's refusal to accept a ceasefire in the conflict, which Ukraine has accepted.
Dmitriev is a key figure in the negotiations that the Trump Administration is separately conducting with Moscow and Kiev to end the war that began in February 2022 with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Putin's envoy participated in the talks held in Saudi Arabia and collaborated in the release of American professor Marc Fogel, detained in Russia since 2021.
Dmitriev was sanctioned by the Biden Administration (2021-2025) for the invasion of Ukraine, a sanction that was temporarily lifted so he could enter the United States this week.
