The European Commission presented its "roadmap" on Tuesday to end its dependence on Russian gas, a process that will conclude in 2027 but will see a significant advancement this year: by the end of 2025, gas purchases from Russia will be prohibited, and Brussels will also require the cancellation of all spot or short-term contracts.
"The upcoming proposals will enhance the transparency, control, and traceability of Russian gas in the EU markets. The signing of new contracts with Russian gas suppliers [pipelines and LNG] will be prevented, and existing spot contracts will be terminated by the end of 2025," the EU states.
"This measure will ensure that, by the end of this year, the EU has reduced its remaining Russian gas supplies by one-third. The Commission will also propose ending all remaining imports of Russian gas by the end of 2027," Brussels continues.
The Commission's proposal also highlights that Europe still heavily relies on Russian energy. Despite the conflict with Ukraine lasting over three years, the EU continues to import from the country, thus providing Vladimir Putin with resources to continue his campaign.
"Last year, ten Member States imported Russian natural gas, three Member States imported Russian oil, and six Member States imported enriched uranium or uranium services from Russia. Although limited, energy exports to the EU represent a source of income for the Russian state and can be used to sponsor its brutal military actions," the Commission explains.
