Philippines' Kanlaon Volcano erupts, ash reaches several localities

The Kanlaon Volcano, located on the central island of Negros in the Philippines, erupted early Tuesday morning, as reported by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs)

The eruption, classified as moderately explosive, began at 2:55 local time (18:55 GMT on Monday) and lasted approximately five minutes.

During the volcanic event, Kanlaon expelled a dense grayish ash column reaching an altitude of 4,500 meters above the crater, affecting nearby localities with ashfall, according to the latest bulletin issued by Phivolcs but no injuries or damage was reported.

The 2,435-meter (7,988-foot) volcano is one of the country's 24 most active volcanoes.
