Following the tragic death of the footballer Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, Liverpool, the club where he played, has announced that it will pay the Portuguese player's family the money corresponding to the two years left on his contract with the English club, as reported by the Portuguese newspaper Record.
Yesterday, a large crowd of people, including fellow footballers, family members, and fans of the Portuguese player, gathered in Gondomar to bid him a final farewell. Among the attendees were the Portugal national team coach, Roberto Martínez, the president of the Football Federation, Pedro Proença, and national team footballers.
Both brothers tragically died early on Thursday morning in a traffic accident on the A52, near Cernadilla (Zamora). Diogo Jota was 28 years old, while his brother André Felipe Silva, also a footballer at Penafiel in the Portuguese second division, was 25 years old.
Near Anfield stadium in Liverpool, a book of condolences was placed, and dozens of Liverpool fans left bouquets of flowers, heart-shaped balloons, and scarves with the inscription "Rest in peace, Diogo Jota".
In light of the tragedy, Liverpool has decided to postpone the resumption of training. Initially scheduled for Friday with a first series of physical tests, the return of the players has been delayed until Monday.
