The President of the United States, Donald Trump, planned to meet in person with the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, next week, as reported by the New York Times, citing two people familiar with the plan. And it seems that it will indeed happen as the Kremlin has confirmed that both leaders will meet in the coming days.
Additionally, Trump plans to also meet with the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, the newspaper reported, adding that the plans were revealed in a call held today with European leaders. Trump would have a mediator role, the newspaper reported, citing two sources familiar with those plans.
The President of the United States has informed of his intentions in a call with Zelensky; the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, the German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, and the NATO Secretary-General, Mark Rutte.
The news was announced after the White House special envoy, Steve Witkoff, met with the Russian President for three hours in Moscow, on the eve of Trump's ultimatum deadline for Putin to stop the war in Ukraine on Friday.
According to Fox News, Putin showed willingness during that meeting with Witkoff to soon have a meeting with Trump.
The same channel explained that the location for that meeting is still unknown, which could be either at the White House or in a neutral country.
Both the United States and Russia described Wednesday's meeting as satisfactory, although the White House maintains its intention to impose secondary sanctions on trade with Russia if the deadline of this Friday passes without the Kremlin declaring a ceasefire in Ukraine.
