Kiev Rejects Putin's Suggestion to Cooperate in Managing Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant
Ukraine has rejected the suggestion made on Tuesday by Russian President Vladimir Putin that both parties and the US could work together in managing the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in southeastern Ukraine, which has been occupied by Russia since the beginning of the war.
"In response to Putin's proposals, we emphasize that stealing does not confer property rights. A thief must return what has been stolen and assume responsibility, not offer it for rent to a third party," a statement from the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs read, as reported by Efe.
The Zaporizhzhia plant has been idle since it was occupied by Russia. Due to its production capacity, it is a key infrastructure for electricity generation in the area.
"The only way to restore nuclear safety is the immediate and complete withdrawal of the Russian Army and the rest of the personnel from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant," the Ukrainian Foreign Affairs statement also said, accusing Russia of turning the plant into a military base and thereby compromising its safety.
