Shein, the Chinese online fashion company, has launched an investigation after an image of Luigi Mangione, accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare's CEO, Brian Thompson, in New York last year, was used to model a shirt.

The image of the alleged murderer, smiling while wearing a short-sleeved, white and floral men's shirt, could be seen on the fashion giant's website, on sale for just under $10, until it was removed.

A Shein spokesperson told BBC News: "The image in question was immediately removed upon discovery."

"We have strict standards for the content of listings on our platform," added the spokesperson.

"We are conducting a thorough review and strengthening our monitoring processes."

It is not known how long the image was used or who the company was that was selling it on the Chinese company's website.

It is still unclear how the photograph was taken, but many on the internet have speculated that the image was created using artificial intelligence (AI).

In April, Luigi Mangione pleaded not guilty to all federal charges filed for the shooting that caused Brian Thompson's death.

The 26-year-old, who was arrested in December, faces charges of murder and harassment.

It is not the first time that Mangione's name or image has caused controversy for a company.

In December, the BBC complained to Apple after a new feature on the tech giant's iPhone generated a false headline about the alleged killer.

Apple Intelligence used AI to summarize and group notifications, falsely making it appear that BBC News had published a story about Mangione when it was not the case.

A month later, Apple suspended the feature after the error and other failures.
