People cheered and applauded when Trump announced that the hostages would be released on Monday.

"I am very proud to announce that both Israel and Hamas have approved the first phase of our peace plan," Trump said a few hours earlier on his social network Truth Social.

"This means that ALL hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw its troops to an agreed-upon line, as the first steps towards a strong, lasting, and eternal peace," he added.

Trump previously announced that as part of the historic agreement, after two years of war, he would travel to Egypt this weekend to attend the signing of the pact.

Hamas' attack on October 7, 2023, resulted in 1,219 deaths, mostly civilians, according to an official data-based assessment.

In response, Israel launched a military campaign that devastated the Palestinian territory, causing a humanitarian catastrophe and, according to the Health Ministry of the Hamas government, more than 67,100 deaths, also mostly civilians.

The UN declared a state of famine in part of Gaza, and independent investigators from the organization claim that Israel is committing "genocide," a claim rejected by the country's top authorities.
