Diane Keaton 's family has revealed that the actress passed away on October 11 at the age of 79 due to pneumonia in an exclusive statement to People, expressing gratitude for the support received.

"The Keaton family is very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received in the past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11," the statement sent to the magazine reads.

The close ones of the Oscar winner wanted to share the causes that Diane Keaton was passionate about and encouraged her fans to support them just as the actress did.

"She loved her animals and was steadfast in her support for the homeless community, so any donation in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much-appreciated tribute to her," the statement assures.

The American actress, also a two-time Golden Globe and Bafta winner, a feminist icon and a symbol of fierce independence, passed away at the age of 79 in California.

Initially, sources close to her told People that Keaton's health "deteriorated very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for all who loved her" and that her death "was unexpected."
