Concurrently with the president's visit, U.S. and China negotiators concluded two days of talks in Kuala Lumpur aimed at finding a resolution to the trade war between the two powers.
These discussions are intended to prepare for the meeting between Trump and Xi, scheduled for Thursday in South Korea. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the negotiations with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng as "constructive, comprehensive, deep, and providing us with the ability to move forward and set the conditions for the leaders' meeting in a very positive context."
Shortly after his arrival in Malaysia, Trump co-sponsored a ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, following a border confrontation that occurred months ago.
The agreement was signed during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit held in Kuala Lumpur, and the U.S. president described it as "a monumental step." During his stay, Trump may have a meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, also present at the ASEAN summit. Although both leaders have raised the possibility of meeting, the encounter is not on Lula's official agenda for this Sunday.
