To a large extent, it was thanks to this lack of coordination that the president achieved a resounding victory in the midterm legislative elections on Sunday, a result that strengthens his political position in the remaining two years at the helm of the Casa Rosada. Although Milei still has half of his term ahead of him, the president himself opened the door on Monday to a new term in office.
During a TV interview, he stated: "I will have two or six more years," alluding to a possible reelection in 2027. The ruling party bloc obtained 40.65% of the votes, compared to 31.7% for the Peronism, a difference that consolidates the libertarian project's hegemony.
Part of the explanation for this result lies in the province of Buenos Aires, the country's most populous district, which holds 38% of the Argentine electorate. Governor Axel Kicillof, leading the Peronist stronghold, decided to bring forward the provincial elections to September 7, a decision that angered Cristina Kirchner, convinced that this maneuver would harm the Peronism in the national legislative elections on October 26.
