The former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, a key figure in the Democratic Party, has announced on Thursday that after 40 years in politics she will not seek re-election at the end of her congressional term in January 2027.

"I always tell my colleagues in the House, no matter what title they have given me -speaker, leader, caucus chair- that there has been no greater honor for me than to be on the House floor and say: 'I speak on behalf of the people of San Francisco'," said Pelosi, 85, in an emotional video posted on social media.

Pelosi, 85, became the first woman to hold the position of Speaker of the House and led her party in the lower House of Congress from 2003 to 2023. "We have made history, we have progressed", she stated in her message.

"We have always been at the forefront, and now we must continue to be by fully participating in our democracy and fighting for the American ideals that we cherish so much," she celebrated. "As we move forward, my message to the city I love is this: San Francisco, know your power," Pelosi added.
