Europe was unaware of Trump and Putin's peace plan

The European Union was unaware of the negotiations between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to define a 28-point peace proposal. Similar to what happened with the Gaza agreement, with the significant difference that Europe is directly affected by the war in Ukraine, a country that, of course, was also unaware of what was being negotiated for its own future. The start of the EU Foreign Ministers Council meeting taking place in Brussels this Thursday has made it very clear that the European authorities have no knowledge of these negotiations.

"I am unaware of any alleged peace plan. The only thing I know is what I have read in the press. Therefore, I understand that we may be facing a brainstorming. I do not want to give it more significance. Spain has nothing to do with this alleged peace plan, and the EU has not been involved either," stated the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, who was the most explicit in acknowledging the complete lack of knowledge on the part of the EU. Furthermore, the tone of the Spanish official was almost disdainful, completely downplaying the agreement between Russia and the United States.

This was not the case for the rest of the EU ministers and representatives, who, although also admitting they were unaware, gave it much more importance. Thus, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, pointed out that "for a plan to work, it is necessary for Ukrainians and Europeans to be involved, that is very clear." "We have to understand that in this war, there is an aggressor and a victim. Therefore, we have not heard of any concessions from Russia," she added.

"We applaud peace efforts, but... of course, what is at stake is Europe's security. So we expect to be consulted," stated the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Radosaw Sikorski. The Polish official is a significant figure, given his country's position and his own standing within the government, and the fact that this nation was also completely unaware is very revealing.

Frenchman Jean-Noël Barrot added that "peace cannot be capitulation." "Ukrainians will always reject any form of capitulation. We want a lasting peace surrounded by the necessary guarantees to prevent any new aggression from Vladimir Putin's Russia," he emphasized.
