Donald Trump has no intention of backing down on his immigration policies and the use of ICE, the country's most budgeted agency, to pursue foreigners by any means in cities and states led by Democrats. The President of the United States has stated this Sunday, disregarding requests to "pause" ICE activities, that the opposition encourages "left-wing agitators to illegally obstruct their operations to arrest the most dangerous criminals" prioritizing "undocumented immigrants with criminal records over tax-paying citizens who abide by the law, thus creating a dangerous situation for everyone." The Trump Administration continues to assert that Renée Goods and Alex Pretti, the two men shot by federal agents, were "domestic terrorists" who "tragically lost their lives as a result of this chaos caused by the Democrats."
Thus, at least for the moment, the possibility of the agency interrupting its activities in the state fades away, chosen not for the number of estimated undocumented immigrants (in border states like Texas, for obvious reasons, it is much higher), but because it has a governor who was Kamala Harris's former vice-presidential candidate. And because due to its small population, the limited number of police officers in Minneapolis, and the fraud allegations within the Somali community, it has become the perfect target.
In the last 48 hours, Governor Tim Walz and the Mayor of Minneapolis have demanded that the White House withdraw federal agents. The Democratic leadership in Congress has also done so, as well as some Republican governors, congressmen, and senators concerned about what they see, about the violation of states' rights, and the lack of control of the border agency. In fact, the country may be heading towards a new partial shutdown, not total, due to the refusal to approve funding for the Department of Homeland Security until action is taken.
But Trump has ignored the request. On the contrary. "I urge Governor Walz, Mayor Frey, and ALL Democratic governors and mayors of the United States of America to formally cooperate with the Trump Administration to enforce our nation's laws, instead of opposing and fueling the flames of division, chaos, and violence. They must hand over to federal authorities all undocumented immigrants with criminal records currently incarcerated in state prisons and jails, along with all undocumented criminals with an active arrest warrant or known criminal history, for immediate deportation," the president demanded in a lengthy post on his social media.
Furthermore, the writing continues, "I urge the United States Congress to immediately pass legislation to end sanctuary cities, which are the main cause of all these problems. American cities must be safe sanctuaries ONLY for law-abiding American citizens, not for undocumented criminals who have violated our nation's laws. All these requests are based on common sense and will provide the best possible conditions to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" concludes his message.
