A light aircraft, identified as a Cessna 172 Skyhawk, crashed on Monday night in the Hudson River, north of New York, shortly after taking off from Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip.

The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. near the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, in Orange County.

According to authorities, the plane lost power in mid-flight and had to make a forced landing while trying to return to the nearby aerodrome at New York Stewart International Airport.

The plane had two people on board: the pilot and a passenger. Both survived the impact with the icy water and were rescued by emergency teams after swimming to the shore.

They were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries and are expected to make a full recovery.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul described the incident as another "miracle on the Hudson" due to the fact that the occupants survived despite the harsh conditions in the river.

This accident adds to other incidents that have occurred in the same body of water, historically known for several landings or air accidents, such as the famous Miracle on the Hudsonof 2009, when a commercial plane had to make a water landing after losing both engines, with all occupants rescued alive.
