Israeli police prevents Catholic Patriarch of Jerusalem from entering Palm Sunday Mass

The Diocese of Jerusalem has reported that the Israeli police prevented Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa from accessing the celebration of Palm Sunday at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre this Sunday, in an event described as "unprecedented in centuries."

According to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the cardinal's entourage was intercepted on their way to the temple, considered one of the holiest sites in Christianity, and forced to turn back. Along with him, the Custos of the Holy Land, Reverend Francesco Ielpo, was also denied entry.

Israeli authorities justified the action citing security reasons, stating that the complexity of the Old City would hinder a quick response to potential attacks in the current context of regional tension. However, the Church has deemed the decision "disproportionate" and contrary to freedom of worship.

The incident has sparked international reactions. Italian Minister Antonio Tajani announced the summoning of the Israeli ambassador, while French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the police intervention, warning of a deterioration in the respect for holy sites in Jerusalem.
