The operation continues as another worker is being sought, after a third miner was found dead, as reported by President Claudia Sheinbaum. Zapata Nájera was located by divers on Tuesday, but his extraction was completed 21 hours later due to the complexity of the rescue efforts. Inside the mine, he received initial medical attention before being transported outside in a specialized vehicle. The miner walked out, wrapped in a thermal blanket and amid applause, and was later evacuated by helicopter to a hospital in Mazatlán.
The accident occurred on March 25 in the municipality of El Rosario, when the collapse of a structure caused the rupture of a nearby dam, flooding the tunnels. Out of the 25 workers present, 21 managed to escape on their own. Days later, another survivor was rescued from a depth of 300 meters. The incident reignites the debate on mining safety in Mexico, marked by previous tragedies that highlight shortcomings in supervision and working conditions.
