A shooting at a school has left at least four people dead and twenty others injured, three of whom remain in critical condition according to the latest official reports. The attack, carried out by a teenager, directly impacted the educational community in the district of Onikisubat.
The provincial governor, Mukerrem Unluer, confirmed that among the fatalities are a teacher and three fifth-grade students, aged between 10 and 11 years old. The assailant, a 14-year-old student from the same school, burst into two classrooms indiscriminately firing at those present. To carry out the massacre, the young man used an arsenal of five firearms and seven magazines that belonged to his father, a former retired police officer.
After the first shots were heard, there was a massive deployment of police and emergency services at the school premises. Videos captured at the scene show dramatic scenes of ambulances transporting the wounded while uncertainty and chaos reigned among the families. The attacker also died during the shooting, although investigations have not yet clarified whether he committed suicide or if the shots that ended his life were accidental.
This bloody episode occurred just twenty-four hours after another former student opened fire at a high school in the nearby province of Sanliurfa, injuring 16 people before taking his own life. At the moment, Turkish authorities are unaware of the motives that led the minor from Kahramanmara to carry out this attack.
