"I think today is a very important day," Trump told reporters on the tarmac upon returning from Connecticut. His words came shortly after federal prosecutors announced charges related to the downing of two aircraft operated by the Miami-based exile group Brothers to the Rescue.

According to the indictment, Castro, 94 years old and then Cuba's Defense Minister, would have been involved in the operation that led to the downing of the planes over the Florida Straits. The charges include murder and destruction of an aircraft.

Trump also stated that the CIA maintains a presence in Cuba and mentioned that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has engaged in discussions with leaders of the island.

However, the president ruled out immediate new sanctions against the Cuban government. "There will be no escalation. I don't think it's necessary," he affirmed.
