Spanish chef José Andrés has announced that he will donate one million dollars through his organization, World Central Kitchen, to address the humanitarian emergency in Venezuela following the two devastating earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 that struck the country.
In a post on the social network X (formerly Twitter), the Spanish philanthropist expressed deep concern and expressed his wish that this donation will help as many people as possible in Venezuela. "We will immediately contribute 1 million dollars from the Longer Tables Fund to help those affected by the earthquake in Venezuela, in support of World Central Kitchen, who are already mobilizing. Let's hope it's not as bad as it seems," the chef stated.
Caracas woke up on Thursday amidst rubble from buildings and debris that fell due to the two strong earthquakes that shook a central area of Venezuela on Wednesday, leaving the South American country plunged into an emergency of still unknown proportions.
In a matter of hours, the residents of the capital went from fearing aftershocks in the middle of the night to facing the reality of a city emotionally battered. Fear and anxiety are evident, with people rushing to stock up on food and buy fuel.
In Altamira, officials were in charge of removing debris from two buildings that completely collapsed; it is presumed that there are people trapped in the area. Amid the emergency, solidarity also emerged. In another area in eastern Caracas, residents of a severely affected building were seen leaving with suitcases filled with what little they could rescue from the two earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 that occurred the day before, leaving at least 164 dead and 971 injured by early hours.
