Where to watch the total eclipse in Spain

Updated

There are times in life when you need to know where to be. August 12th is one of those times. You will already know why: a total eclipse will cross Spain, something that has not happened in a century. Astronomers from around the world will come to see it. It promises to be an unforgettable experience

On August 12th, the Moon will take bites out of the Sun before the astonished gaze of millions of Spaniards and visitors from around the world. Even the Icelanders will see it... if the skies in those latitudes are clear. That's why our geography is the epicenter of global eclipse mania this summer. The overwhelming excitement that this event arouses among astronomy enthusiasts is contagious. The message to newcomers and agnostics is clear: "There is no more impressive natural phenomenon than a total solar eclipse," says David Covarrubias, a disseminator at AstroAfición, one of the leading astrotourism companies in our country. "It truly is the most fascinating thing nature has to offer," he insists.

Let's review the cosmic data: the great total eclipse of 12/08/26, the first visible in the Iberian Peninsula since 1905, will occur at dusk. The totality strip, where we will see the Moon completely cover the Sun's disk (truly an unforgettable experience!), will cross Spain from west to east and pass through numerous provincial capitals, from La Coruña to Palma, including Oviedo, León, Bilbao, Zaragoza, and Valencia. It will last for about a minute or just seconds, depending on each location, during which it will almost become night, and we will see, for the first time for most, the Sun's corona, which, as Covarrubias says, "is like seeing a portal to another dimension". But it is crucial to ensure that on that day, we are within the totality zone: "travelers at that time in Terminal 4 of Barajas Airport will be able to see the eclipse for a few seconds. Those in Terminal 1, none."

Checking Booking to see how hotels are in the totality strip on that day also explains the excitement: rural houses priced like five-star hotels in the emptied Sword. "Astronomy enthusiasts have been waiting for the eclipse date for decades, I'm not exaggerating, with events booked for over two years," says the expert. Furthermore, on that eclipsed August Wednesday, by chance, the eclipse coincides with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower.

Does it sound too good to be true? Well, in Rueda, they raise the stakes with good wine. Finca Montepedroso proposes on that day to pair their Verdejo white wines with music, a cocktail-style dinner designed by the Trigo restaurant (Valladolid), distinguished with a Michelin star, and the solar telescopes and expertise of AstroAfición. The totality of the eclipse in Rueda will last approximately 1 minute and 40 seconds. "With our telescopes, we see the chromosphere, a part of the sun invisible to the human eye. We will also bring binoculars with special filters."

The experience in La Coruña will be very different, one of the first places where the eclipse can be seen in Spain. Here, it will have a taste of the sea. Civitatis proposes a comprehensive day visiting with an expert guide the city's main landmarks, from María Pita Square to the iconic Tower of Hercules, the only Roman lighthouse still in operation today and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Finally, the group will head to Monte de San Pedro, with privileged views of a wide stretch of the Coruña coast to observe the eclipse.

Oviedo will darken for 1 minute and 48 seconds. The city has established four observation points. One of the most impressive viewpoints will be Mount Naranco, with good visibility to the west. Halfway down the slope lie two of Asturias' most valuable jewels, the pre-Romanesque temples of Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo, and at the top, the colossal statue of Christ of Naranco awaits visitors. The views are limitless. The advantages of official observation points are that they are prepared for many people and are a very good option, especially for families.

León, Burgos, and Palencia will be key provinces due to the quality and clarity of their skies. The European Space Agency will be stationed in León to observe and study the eclipse. In Palencia, there is the possibility of seeing the phenomenon on the banks of the Canal de Castilla. The Canal Factory, a former factory converted into a beautiful hotel, will have prepared a chill-out area with music, an open bar, pintxos, and wine during and a gourmet dinner afterward. In Burgos, the town of Castrojeriz, a famous stop on the Camino de Santiago, falls right in the center of the eclipse's path and will be another excellent vantage point. There will be pilgrims who have planned it, but others will experience this cosmic surprise beyond the spiritual. It will surely be unforgettable.

Also in Burgos, another winery with a great celestial plan is Portia (Ribera del Duero). Here, the show will last 104 seconds and will be followed from the highest point of this innovative winery designed by Norman Foster. After the eclipse, there will be a cocktail and a tasting while live music plays and the Perseids begin to illuminate the sky. In the province of Segovia, so close to the millions of inhabitants of Madrid, there are eight observation points established, some in villages as wonderful as Turégano and Riaza.

The totality strip will cover almost the entire province of Álava. The full hotels and restaurants have been evident for months. However, the large number of wineries in La Rioja Alavesa multiplies the options, and finding a spot for that day's evening may not be an impossible mission. The same goes for La Rioja. The Alto de San Vicente, located between Briones and San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in the heart of Rioja Alta, will be the setting for Eclipse in the Alto between Vineyards. Pairing of Sun, Moon, and Earth, an experience that invites you to enjoy the eclipse and meteor shower from one of the most beautiful natural viewpoints in the area, surrounded by vineyards and with panoramic views over the Ebro Valley. And in Teruel, specifically in Arcos de las Salinas, Galactic Eclipse Experience 2026 will bring together scientists, disseminators, and visitors through workshops, guided tours, and, of course, sky observation.
