During a joint press conference with the alliance's Secretary-General, Mark Rutte, the president justified this drastic decision following recent armed clashes in the Strait of Hormuz, labeling the diplomatic negotiations of the past weeks as an absolute "waste of time".
The president confirmed that Washington's forces launched intense bombings against Iranian targets in retaliation for the regime's attacks on civilian ships. "Last night we hit the very dangerous people of Iran with great force," he asserted firmly. This military action effectively breaks the Memorandum of Understanding signed just three weeks ago, which aimed to establish a framework for peace to resolve the region's main conflicts.
Trump's speech quickly escalated to a personal level, using terms like "scum," "crazy," and "trash" to describe Iranian authorities. According to the president, Iran is a nation led by "sick, evil, and violent" people that pose an imminent nuclear threat to global security. "If they had a nuclear weapon, they would use it," he warned before the international media.
The White House's outrage stems from the alleged lack of honesty of the Tehran regime. Trump accused its leaders of distorting agreements and denying key points already agreed upon, especially those related to renouncing atomic weapons. Despite stating that for him the path of dialogue has ended, he hinted that negotiators could continue talking if Iran demonstrates a real change in attitude. At the moment, the president insists that "the ball is in Tehran's court".
