A childhood friend, Bailee Moore, also confirmed the athlete's death through her official Instagram profile: "He passed away doing what he loved most in the beautiful Sierra Nevada." "With indescribable pain, I share the passing of my lifelong friend and confidant, Jacob Daniel Whisenant. The family is devastated by the news," she added on social media.
Whisenant had become one of the most prominent figures in climbing after successfully ascending El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, as well as the Lurking Fear alongside Brant Hysell, their major achievement, in just two hours, 55 minutes, and 32 seconds. That ascent set a new speed record for the route, surpassing the previous record held by Yuji Hirayama and Nick Fowler, who had completed the route in 3 hours and 4 minutes. Additionally, Whisenant and Hysell had climbed Lurking Fear in just over four hours barely two days before. They decided to return and ultimately improved that historic record.
This 2026 had been very prolific for the climber. On May 22, Whisenant and Noah Fox faced another demanding challenge on El Capitan: completing two ascents of The Nose - the most famous route on El Capitan - in a single day. Both reached the summit for the second time after 14 hours and 38 minutes.
