The discovery occurred during excavation work on the property. The eight workers involved realized something unusual was happening when their drill got stuck against what turned out to be a gold bar. Immediately after the discovery, the workers contacted the property owner, who promptly notified the police.
Patrick Feys, the chief of the Dendermonde police district, detailed the procedure followed. "On Tuesday morning, eight workers discovered a large amount of gold while carrying out excavation work. They contacted the owner, who immediately called the police to document the find." At the police station, the gold was meticulously inventoried under strict camera surveillance. "Four people worked simultaneously on the inventory to ensure everything was done correctly and to prevent future disputes," Feys explained.
