The mishap occurred at a cash-for-guns exchange booth, part of a Wellness Fair in the Mexican municipality. A member of the 12th Infantry Battalion, attached to the XXI Military Zone, was tasked with destroying the firearm using a metal cutting saw when an unexpected blast occurred in the presence of several civilians.
The Ministry of the Interior has issued an official statement regarding the incident and the condition of the injured party. The wounded individual was immediately taken to the General Hospital of Pátzcuaro for necessary care. Fortunately, as per the same source, they were discharged on the same day of the incident, although authorities have assured continuous monitoring of their recovery. The Ministry deeply regretted the incident and reiterated its commitment to supporting the affected citizen.
This program, known as "Yes to Disarmament, Yes to Peace", promotes the voluntary surrender of illegal firearms. In this context, the Government pledges to pay up to 33,000 pesos per weapon surrendered, as stipulated for the 2026 disarmament program.
Despite this unfortunate incident, disarmament events remain a key strategy to combat the proliferation of illegal firearms and reduce violence in the country.
